Front Page Fridays Week-25

Front Page Fridays Week-25

Welcome to Front Page Fridays Week-25. On Fridays I highlight a recently published book by showcasing the first page.

My Front Page Fridays Week-25 guest is A.A. Abbott and her new psychological thriller, Run For Your Lies.

Here’s the opening:

He struggled to lift the body. That surprised him. The boy had looked all skin and bone. Strong for a thirteen-year-old, though. Quite a scrapper. He hadn’t expected that either, and it had led to this mess. Who, outside the military, ever plans to kill someone? If only the kid hadn’t fought back.

That shouldn’t have happened. The lad had smoked an entire joint, inhaling greedily, on top of three cans of Breaker. It had been enough to secure compliance from the others. Perhaps this one was already addicted to drink and drugs. They would have bounced off him.

He should have listened to the silly cow. Hadn’t she said the kid had a flaky home life, a father in and out of prison? Why, the youth would have grown up to become a petty criminal. Not now: a ton of misery and government money saved in the space of five minutes.

He’d done the world a favour.

Good luck explaining that to the police.

Dropping the corpse with a thud, he sighed. Should he chop it up? He had to get it into his car, parked on the street outside, and a few bags wouldn’t attract attention. Then again, however carefully he cleaned (and cleaning was not his forte; he paid Cynthia for that), traces of blood would remain in the apartment. If the boys in blue came sniffing, their forensic guys would hit the jackpot. Besides, he wasn’t a butcher. He had no idea of the best ways to cut bone and sinew. And he had a work deadline to meet. He should focus on that.

It made sense to wait for darkness, anyway. Past sundown, it would be quieter. Easier to hide. Cooler. He’d worked up enough of a sweat in this June heat.

Tonight, he’d do it. Late, after the witching hour, at dead of night. He chuckled at his wit. A strategy formed: he’d go out this evening to one of the DIY places and buy a trolley or wheelbarrow. Then, in the slow hours of morning, he’d cover the stiff with plastic sheeting and trundle it out to his car. He’d take a short trip to the centre of Bristol. To the harbour.

The Canon’s Marsh car park lay right at the water’s edge. But wasn’t it too near the cinema? When the screens dimmed, folk still hung around: drunks, lovers, rough sleepers. No, he’d stop further out, by one of the derelict wharves. Only rats for company. No human eyes to spy on him.

A quick push.

Job done.

Tenderly, he touched a mottled cheek. Already cooling, it remained soft and downy. Closing his eyes, he caressed the peachy skin and tried to imagine that the last hour had never happened. Because it was such a shame that throttling a person spoiled their looks. The boy had been so pretty.

About the Book

You can run from your mistakes. But when they chase after you, will the hunt turn deadly?

Juliet Price struggles with guilt and regret. Her mistakes as a teacher not only destroyed her perfect life, they caused a boy’s death. Now she’s broke, friendless, and hiding from a nameless stalker.

Juliet’s worst fears overwhelm her once she learns the child killer who wrecked her future has been freed from jail. After all, it’s thanks to her that he ended up behind bars. Can she escape before the twisted murderer takes his revenge?

If you like flawed protagonists scarred by the past, razor-edge races against time and a heartwarming chance at redemption, you’ll love this suspense-packed psychological thriller.
