Front Page Fridays Week-27
Front Page Fridays Week-27
Welcome to Front Page Fridays Week-27. On Fridays I highlight a recently published book by showcasing the first page.
My Front Page Fridays Week-27 guest is Rachael Gray and her brand-new cosy crime murder mystery, A Storm in a Teacup.
Here’s the opening:
Nestled in the soil was a single yellowed sliver of bone. It wasn’t much to look at, but the animated faces around the hole shone with anticipation as everyone strained to see.
No-one was speaking, but Laurel would bet everyone was imagining – hoping – that this find was something special. Maybe even the something special all archaeologists, detectorists, and treasure hunters dreamed of.
‘Okay, before we get carried away, let’s have a proper look,’ Dr Delgado said in a soft accent. South American, Laurel thought. A solid man in khaki cargo pants and a faded Elvis Costello T-shirt, he stepped softly into the depression. ‘It’s an excellent find, Lin.’ He patted his team member on the back. ‘You’ve done a lovely job of exposing the bone. It could be from an animal; it’s quite near the surface. Certainly not as deep as we’d expect if this were part of a burial.’ The sun bounced off his bald head as he bent his face close to the fragment. ‘Can I have your brush, please?’ He held out his hand. ‘And can everyone move back a bit?’
The observers shuffled perhaps an inch or two, then leaned forward all the more, determined not to miss a thing.
A Storm in a Teacup: book 3 in the Elderwick Mysteries series – cosy crime murder mystery. Published 24th March 2025
About the book
In the sleepy village of Elderwick, the past refuses to stay buried…
When an archaeology dig uncovers a skeleton, Dr Laurel Nightingale finds herself drawn into another grisly mystery. The bones aren’t ancient as everyone hoped, and the police confirm a killer is on the loose.
Laurel, alongside her spirited best friend Maggie and history buff Albert, dives into the village’s tangled web of secrets and lies. As they dig deeper, a local student winds up dead under mysterious circumstances, a charming police officer turns into an unexpected ally, and suspicion spreads through the village like wildfire. Everyone has something to hide, and Laurel can’t shake the feeling that danger is closing in.
Full of twists and turns, and a cast of unforgettable characters, A Storm in a Teacup is a cosy mystery packed with intrigue and charm. Perfect for fans of Richard Osman, this story will keep you guessing until the final reveal.
