My Book Reviews for August 2023

My book reviews for August 2023 comprise five crime thrillers I was lucky enough to read in advance of their publication this month. These short reviews highlight a selection of titles that are all destined to do well in the crime thriller market. With thanks to the authors, publishers and NetGalley for the opportunity to read early copies in exchange for independent reviews.

Just Another Missing Person by Gillian McAllister

A police procedural with twisting suspense. Ideal for readers who enjoy morally compromised lead detectives forced to operate outside the law. It will do well.

My short review of the author’s previous title is here: Wrong Place Wrong Time .

Good Bad Me by Alice Feeney

A number of apparently disparate and chaotic characters become embroiled in a murder at a care home. Ideal for readers who enjoy character-led, unusual thrillers. It will do well.

The Trap by Catherine Ryan Howard

Another inventive plot from this accomplished writer. This time it’s about a missing woman, told from three viewpoints: her sister, a civilian police employee, and a serial abductor. I particularly liked Angela, the police admin officer who tagged along with Detective Denise. The two had better instincts than the rest of the Irish police force put together – and than at least two of the victims…

My review of 56 Days, a previous title by this author is here.

Nanny Wanted by Lizzy Barber

To flee an abusive relationship, a woman takes a job as a nanny at a remote mansion in Cornwall but soon finds herself being manipulated again and in even greater danger. Ideal for fans of domestic suspense infused with the atmosphere of a Daphne Du Maurier novel.

Just Between Us by Adele Parks

A sort of police procedural meets a sort of Gone Girl (but only sort of) in a breezy style. Ideal for anyone who enjoyed the author’s earlier title Both of You as this involves the same characters and leads to a satisfying conclusion.

So those are my book reviews for August 2023. Next month my blog will be part of a Blog Tour for the first time, when I post my review of Chasing the Dragon by Mark Wightman, an excellent historical crime novel.
